Luke O’Donnell made a late start to the season and it appears he has paid the price for carrying the trend into his weekly routine.
The former Cowboy has been stood down for one week following a breach of the club’s standards, including being late to training.
The Eels, meanwhile, have received a boost in the form of five-eighth Luke Kelly and wing Ken Sio, both returning from injury.
FORM: A lesson in defence, learned during their opening loss to the Rabbitohs, helped the Roosters secure two hard-fought victories over the Warriors and Broncos.
While those are hardly two of the biggest scalps in the competition, Trent Robinson’s men have stepped up their defensive effort in recent weeks to compensate for their inability to score points.
Their score of 34 points over three games is the lowest of any team currently in the top eight while it is the third-lowest in the NRL.
Indeed the play-making combination of James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce is still in its infancy but 34 errors certainly haven’t helped their quest for tries.
The biggest work-on for the pair is to get to a kick in every set; in three games they have not registered anything higher than a 78 percent completion rate.
If the Eels hadn’t met the Warriors in round one, Ricky Stuart would probably be trying to rescue his side from a six-game losing streak, with their last win coming against the Roosters in August.
The ‘Hayne Plane’ was in full flight three weeks ago, as was Chris Sandow, but since then there has been little to cheer about.
The latter came under the spotlight for the wrong reasons last week after Tigers centre Chris Lawrence breezed through the little half-back twice to cross the line.
The defensive side of the ball is where the men from Parramatta need to focus on the most. With 74 points in the bank, only three teams, including Melbourne and South Sydeny, have score more so far.
