MISSING IN ACTION:
Canterbury start the season without Ben Barba (club-imposed suspension), Sam Kasiano (leg), Frank Pritchard (leg) and James Graham (suspended). Last year’s grand finalists at least have some good news with the addition of Manly and NSW giant Tony Williams, who will start life as a Bulldog in the back-row, while veteran Steve Turner returns from a knee injury suffered in Round 8 last year in Barba’s number one jersey.
North Queensland are at full strength with the exception of half-back Michael Morgan who is out indefinitely with a jaw injury.
FORM:
The Bulldogs were the surprise packets of 2012 as master coach Des Hasler transformed them from a bottom-eight side into minor premiers before the fairytale ended with a 14-4 grand final loss to Melbourne. Hasler’s second season at the club shapes as an even bigger challenge after Dally M medal winner Barba was suspended indefinitely for behavioural breaches. The Bulldogs’ success or failure this season hinges on if and when the superstar full-back starts playing footy again.
The Cowboys bowed out of last season with a controversial 22-12 semi-final loss to Manly. Neil Henry has always had superstar players at his disposal but now he has something that most NRL coaches can only dream of these days – depth. There can be no excuses for North Queensland this season. If they can keep the bulk of their squad on the park they should still be playing on the first Sunday in October.

Canterbury are riding a five-game winning streak over the Cowboys having not lost to Neil Henry’s men since Round 22, 2008. But Bulldogs fans planning to make the trek up the F3 be warned – that run is about to come to an end. Last season’s minor premiers still have plenty of quality on the park but without last season’s Dally M medalist and their three best forwards – Kasiano, Graham and Pritchard – the Bulldogs will struggle. The Cowboys have arguably the best pack in the competition and with Johnathan Thurston running the show they will be too strong for the depleted ‘Dogs.
